I have a box of Secretos from '08 that have a similar problem. If I find it too tight to smoke, I immediately let it go out, clip off the ash, and then clip the rest of the cigar in four equal sections. Take a razor blade and cut half way in and along the length, and plug it into a dedicated pipe. I made an ultra light billiard shaped pipe specifically for this purpose, light enough to clench in my teeth. It's weird, I know, but I save the cigar and get four tasty short smokes throughout the day (or evening). This only works in a new pipe, as a pipe that has had pipe tobacco smoked in it will ruin the flavour of the cigar leaf.

I have decided to take one of the sticks out and place it in the box it came in. I will leave it like this for about 4 days or so and see if it makes a difference. After checking all the sticks, some do not feel as solid as others so maybe I can salvage around 3, if not never mind...just means more room in the humi for others, and as I am going to Poland very shortly I will be checking for cheaply priced Cubans whilst I am there.
