My introduction to cigars started in the late 80's when I was in my late teens - well before smoking was banned in all public places. Though I welcomed the smoking ban through sheer loathing of stinking to high heaven of smoke, I contributed towards the eye-streaming smoke filled pubs by smoking King Edwards Imperial cigars the odd Friday night out around the town with fellow cigar smokers.
I remember one particular night when the pubs were heaving and one of us clocked a table in the corner of 'Ye Olde White Harte' pub in the Hull city centre. Little did we foresee the effectiveness of clearing the busy corner as we avidly puffed on our cigars to make, what was already a toxic environment, the air quality unbearable for those already struggling with the smoke filled room. Our heads spinning at double speed with the nicotine rushing through our alcohol infused veins, we smirked at each other like the arrogant dogs we were, thinking we were kings.
How my head ached and stomach heaved the morning after through the combined abuse of alcohol and nicotine. It wasn't long before such nights died a death and I didn't smoke a cigar for quite some years afterwards.
