Had my first HdM DC for a while last night, I distinctly remember this cigar as a full of flavour to the nub experience, a couple of years back.
Last nights was flat & pretty tasteless, same year, same cab...'96. I shall leave them alone for the time being but has anyone got any knowledge of these going dead & coming out of it...

Never had a Hoyo DC that old, but, according to Min Ron Nee, the pre-1997 Hoyo DC

Ta for that, the last one I had, would have been @ about 13 years & very very good for me to remember it. these are now obviously 16...anybody any experience with older HdM DC's....
What would MRN class as longer term as these already went to 13 without to my knowledge any flat periods...?

I have no particular hands-on on the HdM DC but there can be several flat periods. If they were mine I would wait at least another 2-4 years before deciding they were expired.

MRN talks about 30 years plus for long term (if memory serves).

There are some really big unknowns regarding modern storage methods, mainly because they have not been around for long enough to find out. MRN (and most of the high-end collectors) favour air-tight'ish, bagged storage. The general consensus is that this will slow down the ageing process but improve the flavour/aroma concentration. With my limited experience with bagging boxes (about 3 years so far) this is a big step forward in storage.

So coming back to your question I am probably being no help at all

For long term ageing, you also need to keep the humidity between 63% and 65% as this also slows down the process.

About 10 years is the oldest HdM DC I've smoked.......and it was 'very good'

Can't say much as to the max ageing of these,

However I smoked a 8 year old on Saturda and enjoyed it thoroughly

Once again...I really used to love these, along with the SLR these were my favourite DC...full of floral and sweet flavours, wonderful stuff...However...Been working my way through a box from 2010 and I hate to use the term 'cardboard' again but that's what it reminds me of.

And here's where I really rub the experts the wrong way and I firmly believe this...When cigars have that blandness about them at a young age, 5 years or 20 will not improve them a great deal.
