  • How To Identify Mold Versus Plume

The topic of whether your cigars are showing signs of mold often comes up on the forum. i thought that I would post an updated thread to help people identify that weird stuff growing on their cigars.

Here are some things that every cigar smoker should know:

    - In high humidity cigars can sometimes begin to grow mold.
    - Mold can often be misdiagnosed when cigars begin to show sign of "plume," which is natural byproduct of proper aging. It can also be misdiagnosed as a result of a third culprit in the form of spotting on your cigars made by mineral deposits. This is a result of the type of water you use in your humidification device, which may not be something that ruins the smoking experience, but it still may be something that you want to avoid if possible. In "Frankenstein's Monster" terms this all can be summed up as "Mold: bad Plume: good Mineral Deposits: Your call dude

Here is a great (and short) article that will help you diagnose the stuff that may be growing on your cigars http://www.bestcigarprices.com/blog/...loom-or-plume/

If you have already identified the substance and determined you have mold on your cigars, what do you do?

First, the cigars that are moldy need to be removed for close examination and the cigars that look fine need to be placed in a new container (try Tupperware as it is only a temporary resting place). Your best bet is to throw out cigars that have mold growing on the foot of the cigar. This is pretty much a guarantee that the mold has infected the inside of the cigar and smoking it will make you sick. Other cigars that show small amounts of mold on the wrapper can be cured if you want to try and salvage them.
    - Wipe the mold off with a dry cloth
    - Put a small amount of pure alcohol on the cloth and wipe the cigars again to kill off any spores left behind.
    - Put the cigars in the refrigerator for a week and they should be good to go.

    The Humidor
    - Rub down the inside of your humidor with the alcohol as well. You have to get the mold spores out of your humidor. Get every corner and nook and cranny.
    - Let the humidor dry out and then re-season it. For tips on seasoning your humidor click here.

The unaffected cigars can be returned to the humidor with the cured cigars, but just for safe measure I would keep them separated for a few weeks.

I had to do this with a friend of mine who had a huge mold problem. It took a little bit of patience and care, but well worth the effort.

Anyone else had to do this?

Wow… This is totally overkill and useless. I hope no one here is going to follow these "tips". Alcohol on cigars, cigars in the fridge?

I think I have got 3 or 4 cases of light mould on cigars in the last 12 years; I just wiped it and it never came back in the same box or even in the same tupperdor…

Sorry but it looks like a joke: the two pictures on that article are showing EXACTLY THE SAME THING, at different stages, and at different magnifications…

"Best cigar Prices", talk about a reference…

In my experience cigars stored in cardboard can develop slight signs of mold. I had this with a box of Cuaba Divinos. They were in single boxes packed in 5 adn I have 5 sets to make a box of 25.

A friend brought them back for me from a holiday where he visited a very well known retailer. I trust where they came from but panicked for a while when I saw it. I went through the mold or plume agony and then after reading a few threads on here I decided to clean 'em up and see what happened.

        I waited and nothing happened.

I'm really glad I didn't throw them away. They have developed into excellent smokes.

This article may be more appealing. It says the same thing, but is a bit more involved for those who need more explanation on how to treat moldy cigars.

I don't know about putting the alcohol on, but there's no need to let a cigar rest in a fridge.

I had a Partagas Culebra that i had in a separate container (cause i had no more room in my humi). I checked one time to find all three sticks were riddled with mold. A dry cloth took care of the wrapper, but all three also had some on the foot. I simply cut half an inch off each to find that the mold had not visibly penetrated that far. I smoked all three that day to get rid of them, not confident with how much good they'd be. I smoked them more or less straight after each other and they were all fine.

Freezing kills beetles, not mould. Mould requires temp & humidity but can remain dormant until those conditions exist. Simple stuff really.
What would I know? I'm just a backwoods roo packin crim from New Holland! LOL. (Thankyou El Cat)

Actually, mould is not hampered by the cold. Everytime I have had a bit of mould in one of my boxes, it was in the bottom of the tupperdor, ie close to the cold ground, in the winter.
I know a (very famous) collector who had a bad case of mold in a box keeped at 59% RH, 55?F.

                      Neddle Thread!

Strangly, I am finding this thread to be most interesting and entertaining. Informative, too!

Hey RJ! I've learned that alcohol goes in your mouth, not on your stick.

haha! Unless you left with the last lass in the pub. Than you may need to put a bit on your stick!

I just found a bit of mold/plume on a couple of my sticks when I went to get some out this weekend. I sh!t myself at first but this has put my mind at ease a bit.

The ones I took out and smoked were great
