  • Box Pressed

    Afternoon fellas, another newbie question...

Why do cigar manufacturers box press cigars? What if any are the benefits of doing such a thing and does it change the cigar in anyway (apart from shape obviously)? The only one that comes to mind is that it wont roll away if left on an uneven surface... Clutching at straws i know.

In my limited experience i have only smoked one box pressed and am sure i prefer my sticks to be round.

It basically historical as far as I know,

Never really noticed much difference between Box pressed and non.

In my experience box pressed cigars don't smoke any better or worse than other cigars, but I am a sucker for them just because I think that a box pressed appearance looks really cool! For example the Oliva series G maduros look amazing (but they don't taste anywhere near as good as the series V!)

I like a box pressed cigar, they feel comfortable to me, however some of the NC box presses don't strike me as being actually box pressed. I think they may be moulded that way before the wrapper is up on as they are so uniform and have serious corners! Lol

I have no idea why I find serious corners cool to look at, but I do. It's hip to be square if you're a cigar!

But I draw the line at those nasty pressed Villiger Exports. They just look like an elephant sat on them!

All new cigars that are square have been made/moulded that way. I am not sure there is any particular reason beyond appearance for 'artificially' pressed square cigars. When we me Horge Padron last year he could not give a performance reason for their square cigars.

AFAIK, historically, the box press was actually a consequence and not a desired effect: for a long time, before the invention of the cargo plane, cigars were shipped from Cuba to Europe by sea. To prevent them from moving in their box, the cigars were packed in boxes deliberately slightly too small.

This practice also allowed to save a little space and weight, at a time when the space in a ship's hold was expensive, and where taxes were applied on the weight of goods.

I am astounded by the knowledge you guys have of cigars. Is there a decent book any of you can recommend that would cover the history of cigars?

Churchills Cigar is a very good read. Not really a cigar history book, but has a lot of good stories about Churchill and some about Cuba.

Another good book for the beginner is the complete idiots guide to cigars by Tad Gage.
