  • Avoiding the kick

    Hullo there chaps.

My second ever experience smoking a cigar resulted in such a massive nicotine kick that I ended up not feeling very well at all! Very embarrassing indeed!

I am pretty sure it was due to me being a little too eager and smoking much too quickly, but do you chaps have any suggestions about how to avoid this? Perhaps just sticking to smaller sticks until I learn to control my enthusiasm?

Its hard to know exactly what to suggest without knowing what cigar you were smoking....but I reckon that slowing down your smoking and going for smaller and milder cigars might sort out the problem. Hoyo de Monterrey, H. Upmann and El Rey Del Mundo are brands that typically produce mild but very tasty cigars. A petit corona from one of these brands shouldn't blow your head off.

I'd also suggest only smoking after a good meal and sipping a sugary drink while you're smoking - these are good ways to avoid getting sick from a nicotine overload.

    Hope this helps.

I've never suffered from I'll effects due excess nicotine but those who do recommend eating first. It may be an obvious one but avoid inhaling.

        +1 on Crusse's comments.

I find fat coke is good with a cigar and smoking on an empty stomach gets me every time so I try to smoke after I've eaten. I sometimes have some chocolate to accompany a cigar as well.

We can all be a bit eager at times to make sure that the cigar doesn't go out - this can mean we smoke too fast and get heat in the mouth or in a particular place on the tongue, particularly toward the end of the cigar. If you take it steady and pay attention to the cigar it will stay with you.

Sometimes a young puro or what some call the sick period will leave you felling, well... sick!

For this reason, I prefer puros that are at least one year old.

Hey el P! So which is it? Did it leave you feeling well or sick?

It was an R&J no 2. I thoroughly enjoyed it up until I was about 3/4 of the way through, I definitely need to learn to pace myself a little more! It started to burn a little unevenly, which I think is why I was smoking too quickly at the end.

If anything I think I was too full beforehand, but I had a bit of chocolate and a coke when my stomach had calmed down enough, and that really helped. I think next time I'll make sure I have something sugary close by!

Thanks for the tips guys, my next smoke will be on my stag do, so I'll be somewhat restricted by the selection they have, but I'll be making some purchases to take with me on my wedding/honeymoon so will definitely keep those in mind.

i have read that improperly Fermented tobacco will cause the same thing, and no amount of ageing will cure the problem as the impurities come out of the tobacco at the very end of the Fermentation process, i personally have been sat on my rear end by both ends of the cigar scale, worst was Partagas Lusi, but been nearly equally wasted by a Monty No4, yesterday i spent 90 minutes plus on the end of a Rocky Patel sun grown Toro that was perfect in every department and did not have any unpleasantness. What to do if you should start to feel battered, put the cigar down have a rest, go and clean your teeth to remove the offending chemistry, it works for me, have a drink, light snack, then get back on that cigar.

Before it was banned Nicotine was used as an insecticide, it came in concentrated form, if you spilled the concentrate onto unprotected skin it could be leathal and often was if not washed off within seconds, it was reckoned if you survived for 20 minutes then you were not going to die.

Cigar smoke should not be inhaled..doing so will almost certainly make you throw up.

another good remedy to help shift the nausea caused by a heavy nicotine hit is sniffing a freshly peeled orange skin! this was something i remember my younger brother doing to help with his car sickness!!! it's a tried and tested old style remedy that's been used for many years!! it's not as fattening as eating chocolate and drinking full fat coke, and it goes great with cuban cigars!!! when i'm having a cigar, i usually have a big orange, a bar of dark chocolate and a nice drink at hand........ does me fine!!!

With the more..... Potent... Cigars, I always seem to end up having a whisky or brandy a few minutes after I finish my cigar. Seems to help.

The chocolate and coke aren't a problem, so far I've tended to have a cigar on my "earned meal" days anyway, so you can guarantee I'm eating something with too much sugar at some point!

I was drinking whiskey with the cigar, but finished my drink long before the sickness set in, maybe I'll use that as an excuse to take a whole bottle out with me next time

that's fair enough!!! i, like most on here, never smoke on an empty stomach!!! it's always a luxurious treat after a hard day and a good meal, and even more so when paired up with a nice single malt, rum or cognac!!! however, i would recommend next time you have a cigar at home, try it with a selection of treats (chocolate, orange, cheese etc)..... it's a good way to add new depth to the flavours you experience!!!

also, don't fool yourself it was because you run out of drink that the sickness set in!!! i tried to convince 'er indoors the same, had more whiskey and got double messy!!! lol.......

                            take care pal,

                            alex

Nicotine is used by many gardeners. It is known to kill and repel aphids that invade rose trees.
