  • Into the fold...

I'm going away to tuscany in september for a weeks relaxation in a private villa (check me out!) I want a pack of 5 cigars to take with me to enjoy by the pool in the evenings. Being quite new I'm trying various different cigars to find some I like and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good deals or have any recommendations.

Ive just ordered a Montecristo No.4 as the 5 packs seem good value for money, looking forward to its arrival and hope I get a nice evening this weekend to fire it up!

+1 for the Petit Edmundo. I think you hit the nail on the head with the No.4s......

I'm struggling to get a bearing on how strong flavored a cigar is. On a scale of 1-10 where would the No.4 land 10 being strongest? That way I can have a point of reference as to wether I would prefer them stronger of lighter when it arrives. Cheers

There are many knowledgeable people on here who can probably provide a much more accurate answer to your question. I guess it depends on what scale we talk, if we just talk about Cuban cigars, I'd say 5-6. If we include all cigars then some Italian cigars are apparently pretty mind blowing. For the cubans, if you'd like to try a stronger cigar I'd go for Partagas Series D No. 4. But you should drink a full sugar coke or something with it the first time because a nicotine overload is not very pleasant.
As for flavour, they all have subtle differences, the Montecristos are always described as woody in flavour, and the no.4 is no different. I find Juan Lopez cigars to have the most enjoyable flavour, but I don't find them 'strong' cigars.

I guess its important to realise that strength and flavour are normally two different things
I hope this helped. I'm relatively new to cigars, compared to others on here, and it took some time before i could really start to pull apart the different flavours etc. You've got to train your palette and have many different cigars to notice the differences
            Best of luck...

              Id go for the following...
              1. Ramon Allones Small Club Corona
              2. HdM Epicure No.2
              3. Bolivar Petit Corona or Bolivar Royal corona

These would be the first 3 cigars I would buy if I started again as they give a wide range of flavour profiles, strengths (none are too strong) and different sizes
A cigar is not measured by its cost - It is measured by how much it burns your fingers

Firstly I love Tuscany, if you're in a town called Cortona I highly recommend a restaurant called Preludio. Anyway...

I'm not a huge Monty fan so they wouldn't get my vote. They sell by the bucketload though so it's probably just me failing to appreciate them! They have such a high production rate that finding good ones can be hit and miss.

If I was in the market for a 5 pack for under ?50 I'd probably buy the Reyes. Meduim bodied, fairly consistent espresso/cocoa flavours but smaller than the M4s.

Now if it were me, I'd spend a little more and buy the two packs below, 3 Upmann Mag 46s and 3 Punch PCs. I had a couple of 46s in southern France a few weeks back and for some reason I really felt they worked in the warm, humid evenings. Mine delivered fantastic fruity/woody flavours with a hint of chocolate. The Punch PCs are a great little smoke, quite nutty, and because they are tubed you can slip one in your pocket when heading out for lunch without the fear of crushing it.

Of course if you want to be brave you look into buying all singles and get some real variety but the problem with that is inconsistency, you can't judge a partucular cigar on just one example as it could be a dud. Just my 2 cents!

Edit: Sorry, just read that you did order the Montys. Hope you enjoy them and your holiday!

I've ordered one monty as a tester, I can probably afford one more to test then make a decision between the two. So ill put all your suggestions in a hat and pick one at random and hope for a bit of luck in finding one I like!
