And, taking things a step further, alcohol usage is also under attack. Imagine Tesco's wine aisles filled with bottles all the same shape and colour but with plain white labels, or beer cans in un-printed aluminium.
Regardless of the packaging, you would have to be fairly slow to realise it wasn't cigarettes, or wine in the bottles, as in your comment. So I'm not sure they would achieve what they set out to do.
Do they think we are magpies attracted to colourful packaging? The most beautiful cigar box to me is plain and varnished with an embossed name of the manufacturer.

Haha thats very good. I was about to argue that mostly, people know what is bad for them etc. and people make decisions based on this knowledge. But then I remembered a case recently in New Zealand where a lady died recently from health issues. She was drinking up to 14 litres of Coke a day and the coroner blamed a lot of her health issues on this, and concluded it contributed to her death. Her husband was interviewed for a news programme and said, 'I had no idea that coke could be bad, I mean, its just like water'.
These people exist, so perhaps the small labels are not such a bad thing....

Being in the printing and advertising sector all I can say is branding and giving something a super duper image helps sale values, regardless if the product is horse shit or a fine wine. Everyone is different though!

I like the sound of the compromise. We should make a plea video to the government!

Some of the time I think.

Cigarette smokers are not generally influenced by packaging. (Marketing and advertising were banned ages ago). Peers are the first influences, and then once they've determined which brand they like they stay with it throughout their smoking life, changing only if a brand is dropped or by a chance experience ie; Bert gives Sid a fag outside the pub and Sid prefers it to his usuals.

Cigars smokers are different. For various reasons they've left cigarettes behind or by-passed them altogether. They do not stick to one size or brand and in the same way as the wine knowledgeable enjoy experiencing all the variety of choices which their pockets allow. For me at least, this Forum has more influence in swaying my selections than any cigars packaging.
If you want to, you can.

A lot of the responses in this thread have been similar to my comments on the petition to the DoH. That cigars (and pipes) are very different to cigarettes in that they are smoked differently for different reasons.

Once, outside my local I was told (whilst smoking a Boli CG) that smoking was a vile habit and should be outlawed because of the risks to ones own health and the health of people nearby. Keeping in mind that I was in the smoking area at about 10pm, I may have responded that "cigars are not a habit, they are a pleasure."

                Very much in agreement.

I was discussing this with my other half last night and she made a good point. Obesity surely is more substantial a problem than cigars so how long will it taje for all food to be presented in just a white box and no T.V adverts?
A cigar is not measured by its cost - It is measured by how much it burns your fingers

Why don't we just all gouge our eyes out now? We will no doubt see something that may potentially, maybe cause us some harm at some point, one day in the future, maybe.

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.

Tippex, I do agree with you there! Tis also a form of identity too. Imagine walking into a humi at your local cigar store to see nothing but whiteness. Would make me think I am in a nuthouse!

The thing that really fucks me off about this is that it's to stop children smoking(which I completely agree with) but its illegal to buy/sell tobacco to an under 18. Maybe go after the shops that are breaking the laws already in place before adding another pointless and nannyish law onto the books.

But then I believe that if your old enough to vote and fight on the front lines your old enough to be trusted to make your own decisions and it's not the governments job to "protect us from ourselves".
