  • Best and worst smokes

I have been looking through the forum since I joined up and have read soe reviews of various cigars that have made me want to try them. This got me thinking about people's experiences of different bends and thei benchmarks both good and bad. Here's mine.

Best: 2006 LE Cohiba Piramides. I was given two of these for Christmas in 2006, I smoked one on Christmas day with a nice port and found into be a very satisfying smoke with a great flavour and consistent burn. The second I put down in my humidor and took out for my wedding in December 2008, he memory of that smoke has lasted longer than the marriage did. It we amazing (the smoke, not the marriage). Even after just two years ageing it had matured considerably, there was so much more depth to the flavour, the smoke was creamy and the flavours really developed as the cigar smoked. This w accompanied by some very nice red wine which complimented it perfectly.

Worst: you know no some people don't 'get' cigars? Well, my in-laws (who had previously given me the Cohiba above) returned from a holiday in the Canary Islands with two boxes of 5, I think, La Flor Canaria. They were Rougly corona vitola with wrappers that varied from a greenish double claro to a colorado. They were certainly immature, definitely a bit moist and were entirely constructed with short filler scraps. Needless to say they were not a pleasant smoke, the two or three I tried out of interest and politeness had poor consistency of draw, harsh smoke with plenty of tongue bite and plugs a plenty. I used one as a sacrificial wrapper donor to repair another (decent) cigar that had a little damage, the remaining cigars I left in an old Macanudo box and forgot about. Strangely, when I found the box a few years later, I thought I'd see what could be done with them. My humi was empty at the time so I put the (now dry as a bone) sticks I there and left them a few days. Surprisingly they were revived and were much better than they had been before this abuse. They were much more consistent. Not good cigars by any stretch, but passable for a dog walk on a wet evening. Says a lot about a cigar that it actually improve with abuse.

Best: I've smoked a heck of a lot of cigars, and plenty of fantastic ones over the years. But one that really sticks out for me is a Cohiba Lancero from 2000 that I smoked on my birthday in 2007 with my good buddy in the USA. Probably wasn't just a great cigar, it was the whole experience that makes it a great memory.

Worst: By far and away the worst ever for me was a Quorum Churchill that I had when I first started. Absolute dog turd!

Best smoke was probably a petit edmundo I had a month or 2 ago, and by far the worst was a Guantanamera Cristales (shudder)
A cigar is not measured by its cost - It is measured by how much it burns your fingers

My understanding after talking with some locals in the Canary Islands is that the main issue with the cigar industry of the Canary Islands is the lack of quality control across the producers. Hence you mainly get pretty average cigars and only the locals know where to get the good cigars.

Best cigar was an RyJ Churchill that I smoked sat talking with Henry Cooper at a Printers Boxing Night.

Worst, and I've smoked some dogs, were the two H. Upmann Half Corona I smoked on consecutive days in the hope that second could not possibly be as bad as the first. It was.
If you want to, you can.

My first H.Upmann was a Petit Corona, and found that to be one hell of a nasty stick too. I have had some really good ones of that brand though, so it's a bit of a gamble trying a new one in the line.

Best, Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios... No, Montecristo Sublimes EL 2008... No, RyJ Escudos EL 2007, ohhh I can't decide. Worst? That's easy, Montecristo Open, any and all of them!

                  Best: Upmann half corona

Worst: Ramon Allones Extra, EL 2011. What a bad cigar; I've smoked 4 from 2 different boxes and all were total crap, tasteless and badly rolled. I understand why they're so cheap (€8.60 in France; €6.10 in Andorra)

agreed on worst! Thought it was one of the better smelling cigars, but was just a disappointment once lit. Have had worse tasting cigars, but I hadn't expected much from them.

Best: Partagas Lusitanias. An all round lovely cigar - smoked a fair few and never had one with a wonky burn or a bad draw, just a lovely cigar.

Best - H.Upmann Sir Winston. Just a great, consistent smoke for the best of occasions!

Worst - Perdomo Lot 23 Belicoso. I should have trusted my gut when it came to trying this cigar and not American reviews. Cardboard tasting, hot, uneven burn. It was a chaw to smoke and i ditched it half way...
Still got a couple in the humi if anybody's interested?
