  • Buying cigars in bulk

I spend a huge amount of time reading about cigars and in particular what my next purchase will be. But I feel like I'm on the verge of going nuts with my credit card (the one the gf doesn't know about obviously ). I'm tempted to throw a large (for me) order on the credit card, in order to get a decent rotation going, alleviating the need to constantly lust over cigars I wish I had, although I know this is all part of the fun.

I'm only talking maybe 4 boxes, but I was just wondering if any of you make a bulk order of stock and then smoke through them until its time to buy more. I'm thinking this is gonna be my best bet in order to get a decent rotation of smokes.

Just after some thoughts really, and interested how people go about their cigar buying.

A quote from American Psycho describes best how I'm feeling right now:

"I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip" Patrick Bateman.

I can't offer you anything really except empathy my friend I know exactly how you feel and I'm fighting similar urges.I give my myself a rough budget for cigars each month and try to stay "fairly" strict with it.That said I was over budget last month and I'm still coveting others! I've got at least the next 3 or 4 months spending planned and it's a real frustration having to wait. But,like you,I try and tell myself that it's all part of the enjoyment of cigars etc and it helps to think about those pleasures when the difficult shifts hit at work.Sorry that I can't offer you anything more helpful.

Your post is one of the reasons we tend to advise newbees to buy a much bigger humidor than the one they 'think' they need.
If you get 'bitten by the cigar bug'.. it can soon get out of hand.

I'd say go for it.. after all, if you're in it for the long haul.. nothing beats having on 'on-tap' supply of well aged smokes.. and you'll only manage that when you have enough cigars (and willpower) to start a rotation.

So.. what are you thinking of getting?

        Thanks for the input guys.

Yeah i'm definitely in it for the long haul, and I'm currently using a 48qt Igloo cooler for my humi, so I have the space. I kind of want to do this so that I can stop 'stressing' about what to get next etc. And then I just have to make a 'cigar payment' to my credit card each month. I'd still by cigars I know, but at least I'd have the staple smokes in my humi.

        Here's what I'm thinking:
        Partagas SP2
        VR Famosos
        Boli PC
        Hoyo PR

When I run out of PSD4's and JL2 I'll have to replenish them too.

But that lot should last me a good while! Especially as I enjoy smoking NC's, and 'value' ones at that. So that should allow me to get some age on them.

I took the plunge last year and converted a wine cooler, filled it with empty boxes and set about the task of swapping a few out each month for full ones. It worked quite well and I managed to get her 3/4 full before I sat back and died on how much I'd spent!

Now after last summers herfing I need to get back on track refilling, I didn't exhaust my supply but they took a good dent. Events up to xmas last year stopped me from keeping a steady feed of replacements coming in, consequently another fairly big spend is called for to 'top up'.

I must say, purely from the ability to keep so many, the fact of having more aged stock to smoke is a wonderful thing in its own right.

On a side note, its hard to know what smokes you need to replace most, as until you have a big stash you don't know which you'll be tempted to dip into more, I know I couldn't have predicted which ones I would finish first.

I'm starting to think I'm not being as gung-ho as I initially thought, perhaps I'm being logical.

That's the idea, that I can do a big spend now, and then chill on the buying for a while having a good rotation of stock that should hopefully get some age.

Nothing stopping you from box splitting if you want to vary your stock though mate do some trading if some of your choices lose favour?

One last thought occurs that might prove useful.

Take a look at some of the recently deleted lines.. it's still posible to lay hands on many discontinued cigars if you put the effort in.
The advantages.. they're generally pre-aged already.. and many are overlooked classics (L.G.C's.. Dippy's etc).. Also, given how rare they're destined to become, this might be your only chance to experience them before they start attracting 'stratospherically' high price tags.

For example.. If you like the 'Party' profile, you should definitely try and track down some LGC's.
Long live the thinner ring guage!

Got to say it's an idea I've employed for the last couple of years. Tend to do a big spend every late-April; and that (in the main) is my buying for the year done. That way I have a good choice and a chance to save some money before the next splurge!

I think I'm gonna go for it. Although I can't fully decide on what to go for. I usually prefer Robusto size, or at least larger ring guages, so not sure about the Boli PC.

                    My updated list is:

                    PSP2
                    VR Famosos
                    Upmann Mag 46
                    Hoyo PR

I'm thinking I may offer 5 of each for sale here keeping 20 for myself, which will soften the blow a little.

46 is good 48LEs are better IMO.

And if your going to make a bulk buy if you can afford to take a day or two in france/spain/germany the prices are much better though i always forget how much...silly me.

46 are more buttery choc and leathery for me, while the 48s are more of a chocolate biscuit.

Mag 46 was my cigar of 2011. I got through nearly 50 of them ( I only smoke 2-3 cigars per week) in about 9 months. Love them
