How far will you let the burn go.

A simple question how far will you let a uneven burn go before you touch it up.

Im asking because lately ive stopped giving a crap about the burn of my sticks after multiple people told me i was far to anal about not having a perfect razor sharp burn so for the last few sticks i left it to go wavy then to go political (either down one side or the other never both) and if its still not corrected a inch or so later than to torch it into submission.

The burn doesn't stay for long. I correct it straight away. I don't care if people think thats being anal, I see it as taking pride in a hobby.

I usually correct after about 6mm but of late they are all behaving pretty well, i've taken to dry (well slightly less humidified) boxing for a few days prior to smoking.

I've read that despite the various techniques of evening up a canoeing burn, the best thing to do is to simply leave it and let it even out on it's own to prevent possibly adversely affecting the flavour by messing around with it. I gotta say this makes a lot of sense except in extreme cases. I mean, you're not exactly gonna get a burn on one side several inches ahead of the other.

Having said that, it's very hard to ignore an uneven burn. An uneven burn makes your average cigar smoker to seem like they have obsessive compulsive disorder. I find myself worrying about it too much, and eventually just cave and have a go at evening it out.

To summarize my essay, i try my best to ignore an uneven burn indefinitely, but i often find myself giving into the OSD side of me.

PS. I found an awesome way of preventing uneven burns. Start the light on a car lighter (the whole foot gets toasted evenly), and then just finish off the light as you normally would. Every cigar i have lit this way could have been used as set squares. Also, I don't know if it's all in my head, but it seems to me that they tend to actually taste better this way. Give it a go just briefly toasting it on a car lighter, and then commence regular lighting.

Hmm i was thinking of buying a hotplate and using that to light it a while ago as it would light everything evenly and i dont think it would impart any flavour on the stick.

I'm completely anal about keeping the burn nice and even. Always got to even it up if there is more than about 3mm of wonkiness

I can confirm that there is something to my car lighter theory. I was lit up a cigar as i made my long journey down to dogsit for someone, and forgot to light it with the car lighter. It burned pretty evenly until the last third, where it really did some weird stuff, which i know it wouldn't have done if i had started the light with the car lighter. i also found it didn't taste as good as it did when i had done it before.

Interesting theorey on the car lighter. May have to try that one. Do you just hold it near like you would with a normal light? Do you toast the edges or just hold it flat to the face of the cigar?

As soon a the cigar starts to burn unevenly I turn the cigar so that between draws and whilst taking a draw the lesser burning side of the cigar is at the bottom, this helps to correct the burn, as a result I very rarely have to touch up with a lighter

I just press the foot against the lighter for a moment. Then i continue to light regularly. I think that it helps because the whole foot has gotten started evenly at the same temperature, probably making any uneven application of the remaining lighting less influential.

The even preliminary toasting could also account for my claim that they seem to taste better. It's well known that the taste can depend mostly on how even the burn is (that is, even in length and in temperature), due to different parts of the plant the different layers of the cigar come from.
