  • Cigars of the year

Every year, that American cigar magazine lists their top 25 cigars of the year. These are mostly NCs with a few CCs thrown in but then hey! If they said 'buy Cuban' I'm sure their sponsors wouldn't be very happy and there wouldn't be much pont in the list. All of that aside, what do you make of their choices?

After recently asking for people's favorite NCs on another thread, I just wondered what the consensus was for the cigars that show up on the list?

The general consensus of people that I've talked to is that whichever company pays the CA magazine the most get's the highest spot.

Personally I don't rate the list at all, any best of 2011 list which doesn't include the FDC short robubsto, Upmann 2, BBF and a host of other Cuban cigars that were absolutely stunning production last year, isn't worth the paper it's written on.

You're best of talking to people on the forums to find out what is smoking exceptionally at that time

For me it is a complete crock. I have never found anyone who consistently agrees with their findings.

I find it repugnant to see page after page of advertising listing their scores, self-for-filling bullshit.

Not to mention how can you really score a cigar anyway? At best a score is a broad indicator (say a scale of 1 to 5) but to suggest a '93' is better than a '96' is just laughable.

It did strike me as odd to see in the first instant that the list changed so dramatically from year to year. As with most things, I'd expect to see a few top brands keep coming back for more (quote Eric Clapton when he was asked what he thought about being voted the greatest guitarist alive and he said "well it's only because Jimi's dead), but that only seems to happen with differing sticks within the Padron range.

It's a real shame that what is effectively the most well known cigar related publication, and the public face which is hit upon first by the budding cigar smoker, seems to be working in such a way. I understand business so I can understand that it's difficult for a special interest publication focusing on a high end product needing to grease their wheels slightly but in this age of communication, surely there needs to be some glimpse of solidarity otherwise it's surely as see-thru as a crystal decanter. and an empty one at that!

all hail the cigar forum with it's open discussion and community of unsponsored aficionados more than happy to tell it how it is!!

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.
