I smoke for many of the reasons detailed above. Hedonism, stress relief, the whole ceremony of choosing a stick, cutting and lighting - which I enjoy as much as the cigar itself. The opportunity to discuss cigars with a bunch of like-minded BOTL on here is a great reason too.

All of the above.
There's a certain moment of contented relaxation which seems to be so easily found with a cigar and a fine drink. There's a certain joy in the ritual, the collecting, the appreciation of what makes each cigar special (much of which, I believe, satisfies the slight OCD side that every man has)... They are a wonderful way to meet and socialise with people - as so many on these fine forums have done so (I would go so far as to say that I have some good friends thanks, initially, to cigars and UKCF). And yes, at its most ethereal, there is simply a certain je ne sais quoi to smoking a cigar.
I like NathanJD's answer though... "Life is for living." (So live it!)

I started on holiday simply because we were in Vegas and thought it'd be cool. There were six of us there, one who was already a cigar smoker and three who smoked cigarettes. I was pleasantly surprised and have kept it on unlike the rest. I only smoke a couple a week but do find it a pleasant and relaxing experience, especially when I'm stressed out with exams or essay deadlines.

I'm 44 years of age and in all my life never as much as took a drag from a cigarette-they just never interested me. A couple of friends of mine enjoy cigars and I always admired them from afar but never had the bottle to try one. That changed at a party 2 years ago when after a few beers I took the plunge and I've never looked back. I've gone from King Edwards to enjoying some of Cuba's finest and now have a fairly well stocked humidor. I smoke about 3 every weekend and I really look forward to it. I kick back in a rocking chair down in the shed with a decent cigar, decent whisky and a bit of classical music and for that hour it's sheer heaven. I love the whole cigar culture, I read about cigars, I subscribe to Cigar Affenionado magazine and I can't ever imagine giving them up.

Relaxation mainly, when someone enters the room and sees me laying on the sofa smoking a cigar with a fine scotch on the go they know to leave me alone. If I see a lady or gentleman smoking a cigar and on closer inspection see they are smoking a Cuban there is instantly something I have in common with them. Socializing at a cigar lounge anywhere in the world is such an easy task compared to a pub or bar.
People may question if I'm just addicted to the nicotine, certainly no more than I am alcohol, I smoke and drink twice a week and many moons ago I smoked cigarettes and it is something very different. Cigarettes are to tobacco what white lightning is to alcohol, cigars have so many more dimensions aside from the nicotine residing inside the leaf.

Although only relatively new to the hobby, I smoke because it encourages me to step outside of my usually stressed and overworked self, to pause just for 40 odd minutes and think about other things. Pipe smoking especially encourages me to philosophize and zone out from all things mundane in life. The ritual, tastes and smells are a bonus for me.
the best example to shut the skeptics up would be this forum. The UKCF community. The affinity for tobacco shared, the warm welcomes given to new members, the advice and recommendations willingly given. I always look forward to coming onto the forum after a manic day to see what everybody's chat is.
Some of the best conversations I've ever had have been over a drink and a pipe/cigar, its a great hobby to share with others. Anyway, that's my musings on it, let the skeptics be so, if they tried it they'd owe you a massive apology!

Well im very much new to cigars but i have to say i find so very relaxing to smoke a fine Cuban. I only tend to smoke at the weekend, mainly on a Sunday morning reading the newspaper with a nice coffee, this is where im totally unrushed and can spend easily a good hour. But i have been really restricted the past few weeks as its been just far too cold. I just cannot wait for Spring, the only downside to this is i will end up spending more money

Good question, something I have thought about recently...
It makes me stop, relax, dedicate time to one thing, enjoy a great or different cigar, have a rum (or 10) and do so with a good friend... inevitably have too much to drink and have the same conversation about cigars each time
It's just a great way to stop and enjoy life in a simple way
