What do you drink with your cigar?

For the odd through the day smoke I do like a nice coffee or just plain old H2O

For evenings, well I guess the only things I drink are Rum and Brandy, I mostly make my own Rum so it's often a little different time to time.
Actually I must send a few samples to you guys that like Rum, i've been told it's pretty nice, I tend to make it at around 30% that way I can enjoy the flavour more

I would be more than happy to sample a home made rum with one of my finest cigars (to do it justice of course). I mainly collect malt whisky but have started to diversify and have a couple of interesting Rums from Berry Brothers & Rudd that go well. I also have a Scotch Malt Whisky Society Rum that is seriously alocholic (84% abv from memory I think) but there is no way I would put a flame anywhere near that.

84% dear god, is it even drinkable? I'll stick to my 33% at least it's safe.

One of my colleagues is a Rum enthusiast and I gave him a bottle today, his reaction was "what's this" opened it, sniffed it, smiled, tried a small tot and has been asking all day where I got it from LOL

honestly with good malts they're often a lot better at cask strength rather than the paltry 40% the supermarkets seem to draw the line at! If necessary you can add in a drop or two of water to open up the flavour (if y'know, you're a girl or you're allergic to taste or something ) and admittedly the first few times you try a good solid 60%er it might hurt a bit, but after you've got used to it it doesn't hurt as much the next time and it's all good!

Sorry guys it is 81.3% not 84%. That 2.7% makes all the diference.

The Rum is cask number R5.1 - Mint Humbugs. Tasting notes are:
A tropical swimming pool. Plastic flip-flops and wicker loungers, followed by pumpkin seed oil, damson vinegar and Cola cubes. With real Cola (and pressed lime) it was sublime.

It goes very warm in the mouth and the evaporates.

Reaver - It's a Rum not a whisky. Yes you can taste the Rum.......just. You get a fair bit of mouth burn but not in the throat. Add a few drops of water and it is much better. Apparently with Lime juice and ice or fat coke and lime it is lovely, though I have yet to try either.

Yeti - It is drinkable but needs to be seriously diluted. It does have a good flavour at an appropriate strength.

Zigatoh - I agree. I prefer cask strength whiskies that I can taste without water then have fun adding water a little at a time until I get it
just right for me. Some are great at cask strength some need water adding to take them down. 50% seems to be a good strength
for a sipping whisky. A slugging whisk needs to be lower though.

I find the trick with any strong alcohol is to hold it in the mouth a little longer (apparently 1 second per year of age is the right length of time) that way it doesn't burn in the throat - there is something in one of my blogs about that.

Used to always smoke them with ground coffee. But found that the coffee does not always clear the palette. But a large scotch with one ice cube, goes well. Have read somewhere that you are supposed to have it with rum, as rum also comes from that part of the world (cuba, central america). Have tried that too, and it is just as nice. But have a collection of whisky now, so best stick to what I am used to. And the whiskys are different so it is not as though they are all the same - just like the cigars. And anyways, dont want to be mixing different drinks. Dont need a headache next morning...

It purely depends on the time of the day for me...bust most of the times with freshly ground coffee, as it happens that I smoke my cigars on weekends after lunch.

Lunchtime a short cigar outside a good coffee house goes well . Early evening i enjoy a good Flora de Cano Rum or a Speyside Malt . Also enjoy an early evening pint of Ale with a Robusto . Right now a smooth Red wine with a R&J PC.

Occasionally a single malt. Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or being the favourite.

But try this sometime.... it works so well with a cigar.
1 part Southern Comfort mixed with 2 parts Bailey's. Heavenly.

I completely agree about the Nectar D'Or - a brilliant find when I was desperately searching for a gift at Heathrow... Got to try a bit and have been hooked since. I always think when taken on it's own it has a slightly Cuban-cigar-like after-taste down the throat (most pleasing). Not so sure of your second recommendation though!

As for my drinking habits: rum and coke (HC AE), G&T (Plymouth), sloe gin and lemonade (winter), pimms (summer), ale (have to say that as a real ale society President ), horse's neck (brandy and ginger ale), whisky dry (Black Grouse for mixing), or simply a good glass of Scotch (whilst Islay's my favourite, I tend to prefer a Highland or Speyside with a cigar).
