  • First real cigar experience and a big hello

    Hi All,

I've been browsing for a while and decided to drop in and say hello.

First I would just like to say what an excellent forum I find this for help and information.

I've smoked and few cigars in my time but never really understood them, totally my fault.

I have been trying to educate myself to the finer things in life and slow down a little from my hectic working lifestyle.

I always knew there was something special about cigars but I could never put my finger on it.

I've only just, today realised I was just rushing things with cigars. I suppose I was just trying to get a 'hit' and I missed the target completely.

My son bought me a couple of cigars for Christmas and they have been lying on my desk since then. A H.Upmann Magnum 50 and a Macundo 1968 Rothschild.

I've been trying to find time to smoke them and have been reading up about them to get a little knowledge.

I wanted to get into smoking cigars first before I tried his gifts so visited Arthur Morris's in Bolton yesterday and picked up a Trinidad Reyes and Juan Lopez Petit Corona. I choose small cigars as I really have little time to relax these days. Hopefully this will change.

After dinner this evening, I drove to the top of hill and sat with the heater on listening to jazz on radio 2. I lit up the Trinidad Reyes and sat back and relaxed.

My initial reactions to the cigar were not good. I sort of fought the flavour, I found the top note to high and I couldn't really appreciate it. I think I was rushing it so I slowed a little, drawing the smoke smoothly and slowly into my mouth.

After smoking the first third something happened. The flavour mellowed and I became friends with the cigar. I could taste everything I've read about the Reyes and I started to really enjoy it. I looked up at the black night and gazed at Orion in the sky. A saxophone on the radio slowly breathed raspy sounds to me as I closed my eyes and enjoyed a really satisfying draw of the cigar. It suddenly clicked for me what it is about cigars. For a brief moment, time stood still and I was completely lost in the flavour.

I'm just back and can say I have had my first real experience with a cigar and I feel elated. My mouth is tingling and I'm so happy in what I've discovered.

I've vowed to make a little time once a week to relax and enjoy the pleasure of cigars. I can't wait to smoke my next one.

I'm itching to buy a humidor if anyone has any advice on a cheapish one. I’m keeping my cigars and in a Tupperware box at the moment and I know they won't last long.

Also if anyone can recommend a few sticks for me it would be appreciated. I'm trying to find my flavour and willing to have a go at any. I would like something around 60 minutes max at the moment. I'm not into cinnamon, nutmeg and woody flavours. Something smooth, creamy and deep in flavour would be nice and any recommendation would be kindly accepted.

Thank you for a great forum. Hope to stick around.

Tabac Pietsch are a great seller, bought from them a few times.

Your smoking experience sounds like mine, can't smoke indoors and have no garden so all my smoking at this time of the year is done sat parked up in the car...

Your little Tupperware box will be fine for now so don't rush the humi buying or seasoning it...

Great first post and great read! Welcome to our little community!

                  Hello again!

About your humidor.. I have been smoking cigars for only about a year now, and have a 50-count humi. I am frequently having trouble fitting new hauls in with my collection, especially assorting them between the sections i've put in it for regions (although luckily i haven't had to overflow them into any makeshift containers yet). I am thinking of getting another identical humi, so i have one for Cubans and one for non-Cubans, which means i would essentially have a 100-count humi.

You may think it now, but the 30-count you're looking at won't be enough for you for long.

Good advice Nightwingvyse. I'm going to hold back for now and maybe get the 100 count Adorini. Just trying to find my flavour so I'm going to try a few cigars and then buy some keepers to age.

As a temporary measure, would a Angelo humidifier be ok to put in my Tupperware tub? The German seller on ebay has them. It looks to be sponge based. Was also looking at the Boveda kits but can't find a UK seller.

Any of the usual humidifiers should be fine in tupperware, or a tupperdor, just make sure you have a hygrometer as well or you could end up with soggy/moldy sticks!

As above bud and welcome to our cosy home, pull up a pew.
For something creamy ( I'm sure I will get back up here) a Hoyo PR, around 45 mins of creamy bliss, something a little longer- HUpmann Connie 1. The rascc is a cracking wee smoke but I would say creamy more white peppery for me
                              Andy

Looking for Monte Sublimes if you have any?
