  • Cheap quality cigars

    Hi there.
I am a complete beginner to the world of cigars and I would like to know what are some good relatively cheap cigars (no more than 5-7 quid each). I ordered a single Henri Wintermans Corona de Luxe and a pack of 5 Luis Martinez Ashcroft Corona. How are these two? Regarding the Henri Wintermans one, I only read (very) negative reviews on it.

Yea, they are machine made with a short filler (means that the cigar isn't made of good leaves, but the shreds of leaves left over from other long filler cigars). They are not comparable to quality handmade cigars, expect to pay about ?8 for a good hand made quality cigar of the corona size or there abouts. Look at cgars for some ideas. The Romeo y Julieta are good, the number 3 which is the smallest in their range is about ?9, and the Bolivar number 3 is a little less I believe and is also fairly good. Have a look at cgars and go to brands such as RyJ, bolivar, Rammon Allones, Partagas and you can sort the brand in price order and go from there. Personally, I'd rather smoke 1 really good cigar at ?10 each than 2 cheap 'bad' cigars ats ?4 each, but that's just me. Let us know how you get on, P.S... Sorry about the waffle

To be honest what I'm saying is that cheap quality cigars don't exist (depending on what cheap is for you). For me I'm 19 and unfortunatly lost my job in September so I'm trying not to smoke too much as I simply can't replace what I smoke so for me a ?0.12 cigar is expensive haha

So both the cigars I mentioned are machine made with a short filler? I think I'll test these first and than try a good cigar to see if I spot any difference. Thanks for the tips.

The HW is yea, never heard of the other one you mentioned. As I said I would rather have one at ?10 than 2 at ?4 each because for me its something to enjoy so I'd rather have 1 I really enjoy than 2 that I don't really enjoy but I have them because they're there and cheap sort of thing. Like I said take a look at cgars and see what you think. Pop onto the newbie greets and tell us a bit about yourself too maybe MrWalnut

Most of these are under a tenner so if you skip a pint or two a day they should be no problem to enjoy at the end of the week.

            Partagas Shorts
            Punch Petite Punch
            Romeo y julieta 1-3
El Ray De Mundo demi tasse (its tiny but great imo)
            Bolivar petite coronas
Pretty much every fonseca is a good little smoke IMO (the number 1 is a good medium bodied churchill sized smoke for ?12 great value IMO)
            Trinidad Reyes
            Le Hoyo du Dauphin
Montecristo No. 4 (cant go wrong with these i always keep at least 5 boxs at all times and i think they sell the tubos at sainsburys)
Montecristo Petit Edmundo (?11 but worth it IMO)
            San Cristobal El Principe
Vegas Robaina Clasicos (?12.50 but damn its a good smoke)

PS. i find the wintermans not to be too bad if you chop them up and smoke them in a pipe

The Luis Martinez are long filler and definitely handmade as far as I can tell. I have had a fair few of the petit coronas and they are quality sticks. Maybe not in the league of some of the stuff mentioned aove, but far far better than Henri Wintermans.

Try these .... you wont go wrong, tasty, slow burning and they're double-ended you can get ten smokes out of a pack.

If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Hmmmm, was that before or after you bought 'em.

I read the reviews after I have ordered it (it's only one), but I could still cancel the order. I didn't because I wanted to see how is a bad cigar like.
Thanks everybody for your recommendations. Btw, I saw that some of you recommended brands, not certain cigars. Can I take it as a general rule that good cigar brands make only good cigars?
Also, how bad is it to keep cigars for a few months in the original package, without using a proper humidor?

what about looking into cohiba clubs? they're quality machine made cuban cigars that last around 20mins and won't bust the bank! they're head and shoulders above henri wintermans etc! you'll get a pack of 10 for a tenner (well, that's what they cost here in belfast), or 20 for ?20!!! also, check out the cuban minis, they're cheap and cheerful and do the job when time is tight or, like some of us, you're an outdoor smoker!

also, they're cheap enough to not worry about putting in or leaving out of the humidor!! also, not everyone who's starting off has the patience to 'endure' an hour with a cigar (i can remember when i started smoking bigger cigars, petite coronas, thinking to myself, 'yes, i am enjoying this, but when's it gonna end?', lol!! funny that recently i was gonna buy some monte A's and cuaba diademas, can't get much bigger than those!)

                      hope this helps,

                      alex

not true, there are plenty of cigars from good brands that I don’t get on with. It all comes down to personal taste really not everyone is going to like the same cigars. My advice would be to try as many singles as possible until you get a better idea of what you like.
Id get a humi if possible or for a cheaper option look up tuperdors in old threads.

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.

also, are you aware that asda (and, for you folks on the mainland, waitrose) stock tubed h upmann corona jnrs for around ?6 each, and punch coronations for about ?7? okay, while not earth shattering good, they are a decent entry point to the world of cuban cigars!!!

IMO you can't ignore a Hoyo de M. Petit Robusto. Maybe a little over budget, but ?9.99 from CGars and a real treat I think.

The likes of Henri Wintermans's: Machine-made, Dutch, pre-cut. Three big red warnings for a cigar.

As for the Luis Martinez: I actually like them. Well made, tasty, affordable (relatively), and simple.
