  • Vintage Cigar Article

A friend passed me a copy of "How to Spend" from 9th December. How to Spend is a Financial Times supplement.

Amongst many sumptuous things in the supplement is an article about Vintage Cigars and the Cigar Auction that has been discussed here in another thread. The article is written by Nick Hammond.

Both Mitchell Orchant (forum member and our site sponsor I believe) and Eddie Sahakian (Davidoff of London) are quoted in the article.

It probably won't be that informative for the seasoned forum members but offers an insight and tips for those who are newer and maybe not as knowledgeable about cigar collecting.

Most of the cigars, like many of the other things in the supplement, are well beyond my pocket but for those with a few hundred to spare and the ability to identify a cabinet of cigars (a box of 25?) that will increase in value it would seem as though there is money to be made buying and selling cigars. There are a few things to beware of though - ideally cigars should be kept in appropriate conditions and not all cigars are guaranteed to appreciate in value.

It is an interesting article - I was going to scan it and post it as an attachment but:
1 - I wasn't sure if it would be OK to reproduce it, and
2 - The supplement doesn't fit in my scanner - it is too big.

Still, if you can get a copy it makes for an interesting read for a few minutes. If anyone really wants it and can't get hold of a copy I could send mine on.

For those living in the UK (and Ireland by the way), something that's not often mentioned regarding cigars as an investment is that capital gains tax does not apply when/if selling at a profit as they come under "wasting chattel", same as wine. In most cases the CGT allowances are high enough where this would not often matter anyway.

I know, It is rather remiss of me not to have an A3 scanner.
