  • Does it have to be a Humi?

Just bought a box of cigars and would like to age them for a few years. However, no room in the Humi. So, would it really be out of the question to just place the unopened box at the back of a wardrobe and forget about it? The room is warm and, well, 'normal' for the UK. The cigars are tubed within the box. Maybe transfer them to a Humi in two years to help them back into shape before smoking? Or does a Humi really have to be involved from day one?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Some sort of humi system does or you'll have a box of dried up old cr*p look up tupperdors as an option...

hehe slightly tongue in cheek, but after two years they'll be dried up old husks, all the oils gone and unrecoverable... tupperdor and maybe some humibeads, pretty cheap storage for fine cigars oh and missed the tubed bit!! Tubed Might (might) might be ok.... would humidify them some way meself but others might say otherwise...

Go the tupperwear route with some sort of humidification. Even though tubed I wouldnt risk it.

I would take some less expensive cigars that are already in your humidor and replace them. Put the less expensive cigars where you were planning to put the new box.

There is also the school of thought that to age well they should be stored out of their tubes.

I dont subscribe to those views. Tubos should be left in tubes. Take the cap off to let them breath but I'd keep them in the tube to preserve the cedary goodness.

I agree with this. When they're in tubes they're like wounds that never get changed bandages, or like convicts in solitary; They don't get any better....

I think it's important for cigars to get at least just a little air during the ageing process.

Dont risk spoiling them , leave in tubes caps off or loose in a decent Humi , smoke others and make room ? Sure some BOTL here would oblige.
Also you dont want the room warm, cooler is better for long storage, store them at an even humidity and temp,in order to last without drying or splitting.

Do you have to leave tube caps off though? In the tobacconists I have been to leave them in tubes with cap on inside the humidor. Most of my tubed gars I have left the lids on and have been fine, maybe for only a short time period!

Most would say leave the caps loose or off to allow humdity to circulate.
