  • Humidor and Draw Quality

    OK,

So I smoked my first cigar (a Romeo y Julieta Petit Julieta). Despite its great flavours, I found the draw a little tough, and I had to pull hard for a decent burn pretty much all the way down until the last third of it.

I'm still very new to cigars, to say the least but I do have a quick question:
For instance if I put a single cigar (like the Petit Julieta which is quite small, 4 inches) into a proper good quality wood humidor, even for a few days, would that affect the quality of the draw at all?

The cigar would be better humidified. Would that make it more difficult to get a nice draw, or easier..? Or would it make no difference...?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Things that cause "puro plug."

    The "tightness" of the bunch.

The type of leaf used in the puro.

The humidity level of your unit - too humid can cause a tight draw; to dry can cause a loose draw.

One method for curing "tight" sticks is to "drybox" the sticks for a few day before you enjoy them.

Another is to use a "draw poker" (Well, that's what Catalina Joy said).

Having a cigar in a humidor keeps it at a higher relative humidity than most climates. If anything, this will expand the tobacco and in fact make a tighter draw. A dry cigar will have the lightest draw, but will burn too hot, too quickly and will taste bad. Using a humidor will result in longer, more pleasant smokes.

It's likely that if the draw was tight at a lower humidity outside of a humidor, it was just rolled tightly. If you find another cigar is packed tightly, take a thin Allen Key (1 or 2 mm) and carefully poke it through from the head as far as you can most of the way down. This will loosen the draw. I think someone else on this forum mentioned this, i tried it, and really found the silver lining of a dark cloud that is an overly packed cigar.

I've seen these floating around. i'll probably buy one eventually to see if it works better, but the Allen Keys work pretty well anyway.

You lot are awesome, thanks. I can't be doing with tightly drawing cigars!

                That must be pretty wide.
