im fairly new to the cigar scene as far as good smokes go.
tried the ?1 a pop types u get in the local garage forcourt, then moved to henri wintermans and castellas etc
also tried a few turkish/tunisian brands that were actually ok..

but as for the great selection out there i am still totally perplexed, go into the shop and am inundated with choice, with no real direction of what to try

can some of you officinados give me some pointers of brands/types that may be worth loooking into

in the past i have gone for the darker choc looking cigars as i like a stronger taste.. and was informed by a local shop that they were the ones to try ( names escape me)

Many people enter the world of cuban cigars via the Montechristo Number 4 (i know I did). Another popular starting point is the Romeo y Julieta number 3. Neither are huge cigars and both are quite easy to tackle. at the end of the day, the choice is huge, start off by finding one you like and think about why you like it, then ask for some advice on similar cigars and people like the good folks here will delight in recommending other brands with similar qualities.

Try different good habanos that don't break the bank:

– spices, bitter cocoa, brown sugar: Partagas Short
– earth and dark cocoa: Bolivar Corona Junior (or Petit Corona)
– leather, wool, roasted coffee: Ramon Allones Small Club corona
– strong, rustic spicy and grilled flavours: Jose Piedra Petit Cazadore
– tawny, coffee, with creamy texture: Montecristo No.5 or No.4
– wood, molasses, peat: San Cristobal El Principe
– wood, wood and wood: Romeo&Julieta No.3 or No.2 (both are in tubos)
– Ripe fruit, nuts: Punch Petit Punch (if you can find it…)

I have deliberately omitted the Trinidad Reyes that is very good (my fav' in these sizes) but much more pricey.

If none of these suits your taste, forget the habanos and try some non-cubans!

If you want to try some cigars of similar prices, i think the Chinchalero, 3x3 and especially the La Rica lines are severely underrated. More specifically, the La Rica Robusto, Chinchalero Chico, and the 3x3 Corona.

Of the more expensive cigars, you really can't go wrong with brands like Cao, Nub, Fonseca, Romeo y Julieta, and my personal favourite, Partagas. Particularly the Nub Connecticut, the Fonseca KDT Cadetes, RyJ Wide Churchill, the Cao Italia Novella and the Partagas Serie P No.2.

Can't quite tell if you're serious, muchacho, but if you are, I must disagree. I think what senor lil'stick has done is provide a list of the different marcas available at reasonable prices - a good way for a knewbee to become familiar with the wonderful world of Habanas without breaking the bank.

Regarding your list, I not sure I'd recommend stuffing a NuB in the smoke-hole of a cigar knewbee.

I see what your saying, mate. Thanks for clearing that up. As I read your response, it did seem a tad harsh since it followed senor lil'sticks fine suggestions.

If I may, one easy way to avoid "reader confusion" is to include in your post a quote from the post you're responding to. That way, it's easier to follow "cross conversations."

A good place to start may be some of the samples from the cgarsltd website. I will pop a link to the homepage of samplers at the end of my post, from here you can go cuban or non cuban, then select how you want them listed (price is always a good option haha). Samplers have been good to me in my first couple of months of smoking because they allow you to try a lot of different sizes, shapes, brands and wrapper types etc.

The samplers are the first few things I bought because it allows you to build up a knowledge of your tastes etc fairly quickly

thankyou for the suggestions people.

yes i did start on some of the bad ones.. but as a noobie you dont really know any better, i remember loving the smell of other people cigars and i would delibratley sit next to anyone smoking a cigar just to inhale the aroma.
as a noobie you just think a cigar is a cigar, and its only with education, experience and the help of friends like in places here that you learn how very wrong you are lol

now i have some names to specifically look for on my next shopping trip ill be armed with 100% more info than last time
also looking into the cigar samplers, and possibly the monthly club where 4 or 5 diffrent sticks get sent out each month as a way ot educating my pallette.

As James811 mentioned, Cgars Ltd is the ultimate place to get cigars considering price and selection. You may find them cheaper elsewhere occasionally, or find ones that aren't stocked every now and again, but overall it's the best. I don't think i've ever noticed any cigars on that site that you can't buy only one of, so it's great for sampling. A good tip is to not bother with the sampler packs on the site, as you don't save any significant money to how much you would pay adding them all to the basket individually (in fact, i've seen some which are more expensive than the individual cigars combined). The best thing to do is to design your own samplers. I am getting fairly experienced with cigars and have no inclination to buy boxes or packs. I still buy individual cigars at once.
