Lit my cigar yesterday with matches and I couldn't get it going properly. I guess I am impatient but gas works for me. I have a 'cooks burner' as well for the really difficult buggers.

Due to all the responses above, Im curious, what butane jet lighters are you all using? Might be a good investment for some outdoors smoking!

So...How do you light up? And what are your reasons behind this?

I am with you on this Detroit, partly because I cant be arse with buying a butane ligher but also because I like the ritual of lighting up with matches.

I smoke outside nowadays so wind can be an issue, if its bad I just step into the garden shed and light up there.... taking great care not to burn the bloody thing down of course.

            Me:

I use matches. I have always like using matches, I like the fact they take a bit of time and a bit of effort. There is something about that, that helps me to start relaxing ahead of the smoke. I normally toast the foot first, before heading for a full light. This normally does the job without any hassle! Obviously this isn't ideal in some conditions (high winds outdoors), however I haven't found myself in one of these situations yet, so its yet to be a problem.
Oops! Somehow managed to write my reply in the middle of your quote Detroit...
